Sadly, external elements such as rain can still find a way into your house despite your efforts to avert them. Unfortunate incidents happen, and when they occur, it’s necessary to take appropriate measures without delay, mainly when there’s a likelihood of water devastation to your dwelling.

If you discover your roof is leaking, there are several vital measures you can take to handle the situation and cut down any possible damage from water.

If you’re dealing with a leaky roof, take the following steps to minimize damage resulting from water creeping into your house.

Get Things Out of the Way

A leaking roof is the last thing that anyone would wish to encounter unprepared. A leaky roof, if not detected and worked upon on time, can destroy your belongings. If you discover a leak in any part of the house, the first thing that should come to your mind is to clear the area.

Penetration of rainwater into your house via a leaky roof can entirely wreck some of your valuable possessions, something that no one wants to imagine. On top of that, some fabrics trap water and develop an unpleasant mildew odor.

Therefore, move out all the possessions within the affected area swiftly.

Try to Contain the Water

If your roof is leaking, take the necessary measures to contain it as much as you can. Use towels, buckets, garbage cans, and any other tool to trap the water to minimize the impact and damage resulting from water.

If not checked, rainwater can build up in your house, causing damage to the floors. To mitigate this, ensure you have multiple containers in handy that can regularly capture the water and empty them outside the house to lessen the risk of overflow.

Relieve Heavy Pressure

If your ceiling has a visible swollen spot, then this is an indication of water pooling at that point. If no action is taken to deal with the pooling water, the water will likely continue to collect, and when it becomes unbearable, it will cause severe damage to the ceiling.

Therefore, it’s prudent to poke a hole in that spot as soon as possible.

Besides, it could ultimately blow up on its own, wreaking havoc on your property. Fortunately, this is a DIY task as all you need is a screwdriver to cautiously perforate the bottom point of the swollen spot and place a bucket underneath it to collect the water.

The number of holes you can pierce will depend mainly on the size of the leak. Hence, the larger the leak size, the higher the number of holes perforate and vice versa.

Cover the Roof

If your leaky roof cannot be addressed right away due to various reasons, covering the roof with waterproof material is the ideal option in such a situation. If the roof is in an excellent state to climb, cover the affected area with a waterproof cloth or material.

At times, it can be challenging to spot the affected areas. If you’re enduring difficulties ascertaining the problem area, spot the leak from inside and use it to determine the spot’s actual location on the outer part of the roof.

Once you have identified the exact leak location, put a waterproof cover on top of it to prevent water entry into the house and minimize potential water damages.

Call a Professional Roofer

A leaky roof isn’t something easy to take on, so it’s good to hire a professional roofer. This is a problem that needs to be fixed right away because failure to do so will worsen the problem.

There’s little you can do on your own to manage the situation; therefore, it’s necessary to hire a roofer to fix it immediately. Seasoned roofing contractors can repair the affected area and check out other leaks on your roof that may demand repair or reconstruction.

Take Pictures for Insurance Documentation

If you’re pondering about filing an insurance claim, it’s necessary to document the damage with photos, as this will simplify the process. This process is essential, especially if the damage is qualified for a claim.
